It's a series of tubes 28 Jul 2006
US Congress is about to decide whether to abandon the internet's first amendment - a principle called "network neutrality". Network neutrality prevents major telcos from providing a premium rate, lightening-fast content delivery service for large corporations. A service that some say will create a "two-tier internet" consisting of a fast lane for the privileged and a dirt track for the rest of us.
Republican Senator Ted Stevens recently explained why he was against net neutrality and in doing so gave an amazing primer on how the internet works...
"An internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?
"Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.
"They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.
"It's a series of tubes.
"And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."
...Wow! We're looking forward to Mr. Stevens' next presentation, "The car: a horseless carriage for the next generation"!
